Description
As his reputation grew, Turner began to throw off the more traditional principals of his forbears in order to experiment with effects of light and colour rather than concentrate on structural details. Though his work was criticised at the time for being "indistinct" in its execution, he continued to work in this more abstract, expressionistic way, as demonstrated in this work entitled Lake of Brienz - The Lauerzersee, with The Mythens, painted towards the end of his life c.1848. Light and sky dominate the picture, and we can just make out the suggestion of a shepherd with his flock in the foreground.
